Alameda School Field Improvement Project
Efforts are underway to replace the field at Alameda Elementary to provide a safe, clean, fun field for our kids to play on.
In early 2016 a small group of parents came together to see if the field at Alameda Elementary could be improved from its current state of bare patches, hard-packed dirt which turns to mud due to poor drainage when the weather turns rainy, an uneven, poorly graded surface, and an irrigation system that needs repair/updating.
We researched the pros and cons of grass vs. artificial turf, calculated costs of both, talked to Portland Public School’s maintenance department, Alameda Elementary Principal, Raddy Lurie, and the PTA to garner support. Once this was done we started our fundraising efforts.
2016 proved to be a difficult year for PPS with lead tainted water and buildings, losses and shifts in top administrative positions, and then an election that resulted in the loss of a measure which was projected to be a significant funding source. All of this has resulted in a reprioritization of funds and projects. We have not been able to raise the approximately $300,000 we would need to completely re-do the field and it is clear that now is not the right time to undertake a complete field improvement renovation.
WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED: Despite these obstacles, we have raised close to $7,000 through generous donations from individuals and businesses. We have these funds earmarked for field improvement and maintenance as part of the general Alameda PTA funds. The funds are being immediately applied for field improvements including aerating, reseeding, and fertilizing throughout the year.
We have already had the field aerated, tilled and seeded twice (regular and slice seeded)- in addition to having a section of sod placed in the center of the field to fill the ‘mud hole.’ We completed a 2nd re-seeding this spring with the help of Mark Franklin and his team at PPS
WHAT IS NEXT/ SHORT TERM FIX: We are also working closely with PPS to repair the existing irrigation system to improve the field conditions in 2017/2018. This will hopefully result in filling in bare spots and improving the overall health of the grass and underlying soil. This work is scheduled to start in June 2017.
LONG TERM: The PTA has adjusted the approach of the complete renovation of the field as a long-term, capital improvement effort. There is currently a ‘call out’ to any volunteers interested in grant writing and soliciting donations from large donors and community members in an effort to raise the funds needed for a completely new field.
Though the scope of the project has been adjusted in the short term, we know we can continue to make the field a much better field with the smaller funding we have raised and continue to raise from individuals like you who want to see an improvement for both the students and the surrounding community. We will keep you posted as the process continues.
$300,000 for initial capital improvements plus additional funds to maintain the field for many years to come (including upgrades to fencing).
The Alameda PTA is undertaking this project. It is currently gathering volunteers to raise the capital funds.
